ADOPT A LEGISLATOR A Project of the JPCA Legislative Committees
The 2003 Legislative Session promises to be the most challenging for JPs and Constables in decades. For the first time in 30 years, as many as 50 or more legislators will be freshmen. The opponents of county government as we know it have made clear their intentions that County Judges and Commissioners should be elected and other county officials should be appointed or abolished as the commissioners see fit.
Our challenge is to quickly develop relationships with and educate members (especially new members) of the incoming Legislature about the importance of JPs and constables as the courts and law enforcement closest to the people.
This is where we need your help. The legislator who knows you and respects your work is not likely to vote to adversely affect constables and JPs. And since senators and representatives tend to respond more favorably to people they know from home, we are asking you to take responsibility to educate your representatives and senators about the importance of JPs and constables in your community.
You can count on me to adopt a legislator!
- I will contact my adopted legislators at the beginning of the legislative session to provide them with the JPCA legislative package.
- I will contact my adopted legislators when necessary to urge them to support or oppose specific legislation.
If your legislative race(s) is contested, indicate the candidate you would be willing to adopt.
